STRESS, HORMONES AND GUM DISEASE:

Gum Disease treatment in Smithtown, Long Island

A review of past research published on the Journal of Periodontologyuncovered as strong relationship between stress and gum (periodontal) Disease.  Physiological factors such stress, depression, distress anxiety and loneliness showed a positive relationship to gum disease.
Researchers speculate that the hormone cortisol may be at the root of the connection between stress and gum disease.  Prior studies have shown that elevated levels of cortisol could lead to increased destruction of the gum and jawbone around teeth due to periodontal disease.  Since people under stress tend to increase their bad habits such as poor diet, poor oral hygiene and in some cases increased consumption of alcohol, nicotine or recreational drugs; they may ultimately increase their risk for a group of diseases know as Metabolic syndrome, gum disease being among them.
Although more research in this area is needed to determine the definitive relationship between then, Dr. Diane Peruzo believes that people who minimize stress in their lives will be at less risk for gum disease.   streIt is suggested that by decreasing stress through healthy means such as exercise, plenty of sleep, an anti-inflammatory diet, and a positive mental attitude can have a synergistic effect on the health of your mouth and gums.
