LASER DENTISTRY: A NEW HOPE

As the first adult Laser Dentist in Smithtown NY, Dr. Shvartsman has focused on providing you with the most comfortable dental care possible. That is why we offer Laser Dentistry as an alternative to traditional techniques. We currently use 3 different lasers in our laser dental practice.

Lasers have had a major impact in dentistry, especially in the past decade. Like many industries, dental lasers are used to improve the results of many traditional procedures including removing decay, surgery, canker sore treatment, periodontal disease treatment, root canal therapy and TMJ treatment. Lasers help reduce swelling, pain and remarkably help to improve our bodies healing response. In properly , trained hands dental lasers are safe, effective and are transforming the dental experience for our patients.

What is a LASER?  A laser is a highly specialized light beam that in the case of most dental lasers is invisible.  The light is focused which allows us to precisely target the beam and, unlike the drill, eliminate potential damage to other teeth, lips, cheeks, or gums.

Lets take a look at some different Dental Laser applications:

Laser Cavity Scanner: The Diagnodent.
Traditionally all dentists are taught to use a sharp-pointy pick to check for cavities. You may have this instrument stuck in your tooth in the past. Not only can this be painful, but also a sharp-pointy hook coming at your face is not a comforting experience if you are already nervous at the dentist. The fact is cavity detection with this mechanical technique is only about 60% effective; many small cavities go unseen and can become large cavities if left untreated between your normal dental check-ups. This can lead to unnecessary root canal treatment, crowns or extractions.

Dr. Shvartsman  uses the Laser Cavity Scanner called the DIAGNOdent. This laser is over 90% effective in painlessly finding event the smallest cavities early, when they can be treated conservatively with a small filling. In many cases patients do not even need a shot! We are thrilled to offer this gentler and more diagnostic laser to our patients.

Laser Decay Removal:
The Versawave: This Er:Yag dental laser allows Dr Shvartsman to treat cavities without the use of needles and Novocain. This laser combines light energy with water to affect the tooth without excess heat production.  Dr. Shvartsman  can use this “water laser” to gently remove decay in teeth, significantly reducing the use of the dental drill. Since the 3 most common fears of dentistry are needles, pain and the drill, many people prefer laser dentistry to threat cavities over the traditional shot and drill approach.  Over 75% of our patients do not feel anything at all during treatment. Those that do feel something say it wasn’t bad enough to need a shot. You can have a filling done and go have a meal, give a speech or meet with a client without the worry of looking and sounding funny from a numb lip and face.

Laser Gum Disease Treatment: The Diode Laser: Gum disease is caused by bacteria deep under your gums and around your teeth. Traditional treatment involves gum surgery along with the use of antibiotics and other chemicals to kill these bacteria so the gums can heal properly.   Dr. Shvartsman offers a chemical-free alternative: Photo Disinfection with the Diode Laser. This technology has been proven to be extremely effective at removing harmful bacteria and infected gums tissue from around your teeth. In addition Healing is actually faster after laser use. They have had great success with this Non-Surgical form of laser gum disease treatment because lasers can help remove bacteria from your mouth and help you maintain optimal oral health.

Laser Root Canal Disinfection: Failed root canal procedures from improperly disinfected roots is the main cause of root canal re-infection which can lead to costly retreatment and even tooth loss. The added level of disinfection with dental lasers is  a welcome benefit during Root Canal Treatment. Even with the best techniques, it is not possible to fully kill all the bacteria in the root of the tooth.  Using a laser will increase the probability of long lasting success of the tooth be cleaning the bacteria all the way down to the end of the root

Laser Canker/Cold Sore Treatment:
Many people needlessly suffer from canker sores or cold sores also known as apthous ulcers and herpes simplex 1, respectively.  Gentle Laser energy is used in our office to quickly heal these painful and sometimes debilitating mouth ulcers. Not only is the pain reduced immediately, but also the ulcers heal in 1-3 day versus the usual 10-day healing period.

Lasers for dental surgery: A laser has the ability to replace a scalpel for almost all surgical procedures performed by Dr. Golan and Dr. Shvartsman. Lasers allow for improved precision and less cutting and have the unique ability to cauterize blood vessels during incisions. Historically complex and bloody procedures are a thing of the past. As an added bonus lasers stimulate the body’s healing response, reduce swelling and pain and recovery time. Biopsies, frenctomies, cosmetic gum lifts and many other surgical dental procedures are now a breeze

Low Level Lasers Therapy: Dr. Shvartsman takes advantage of laser energy’s ability to stimulate your body’s healing response.  Low Level Lasers are painless and are becoming widely used in many medical fields. In dentistry they are used to help treat TMJ problems, improve healing after surgery, reduce pain after Root Canal Treatment.

At the New York Center for Biomimetic dentistry, Drs. Shvartsman and Golan, have used lasers for many years and are confident that we can change the dental experience for you and your family.  Lasers fit well within their philosophy of Minimally Invasive and Biomimetic Dentistry.
