Birthday on Earth Day: Dr. Shvartsman turns 40!GREEN DENTISTRY:
eco-friendly dentistry for a healthier future.
Being born on Earth Day has always kept Dr. Shvartsman eco-friendly. In fact, he drives a Prius.
At State of the Art Comfort Dentistry we are eco-conscious as well. Your at home maintenance as well as your dental visits can be more earth-friendly, thanks to procedures and products aimed at keeping both your mouth and our planet clean and healthy for our future. From in office procedures and products that reduce the amount of waste released into our environment to all natural toothpastes and biodegradable toothbrushes. New possibilities are here.
The paper-less dental practice: Computers and associated technology is allowing green-minded dentists like Dr. Shvartsman to use digitized dental records and reduce or eliminate paper, mail, and ink cartridges which all contribute to our planet’s pollution. In fact, Congress recently passed the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act mandating the digitizing of all medical records by the year 2014. Drs. Golan and Shvartsman are proud to be in the forefront of this revolution. Their dental records are encrypted and stored safely off site for easy retrieval.
Eco-friendly x-rays: In addition to reducing X-radiation by over 90% and producing more diagnostic images digital dental X-rays are healthier for the environment. Traditional dental X-rays use led lined plastic and paper packets to store the film as well as caustic and dangerous chemicals to develop the film. Millions of gallons of these chemicals and millions of pounds of plastic and lead annually add to the pollution of our planet. Dr. Shvartsman understands that using digital x-rays may not only reduce their patient’s health risks, but also help to keep our planet cleaner.
Earth-safe fillings: Traditional metal-amalgam fillings are 50% mercury, a toxic heavy metal. Dr. Shvartsman is mercury-dentists who does not use metal amalgam fillings and does not create a demand for the production of plastic encased silver-mercury capsules that are used to mix the metals that produce amalgam fillings.
The flip side of the amalgam-metal filling coin is when the silver–mercury fillings are removed. Traditionally, the silver and mercury that is drilled out is simply dumped into the water system. This has become such an environmental problem that several European countries, including Sweden, Denmark and Norway have banned silver-mercury fillings form use. and Dr. Shvartsman uses an amalgam-separator devices to filter the heavy metals form their water system before it reaches our environment. Every few months environmentally conscious companies carefully dispose the amalgam waste.
Replacing Lost teeth: Dental implants, which are a complete tooth replacement, including the root under the gum and the tooth above the gum, are the longest lasting and most maintenance free option to replace your missing teeth. Over the course of a lifetime you will leave a smaller pollution (and financial) footprint with dental implants than dentures or bridges, which may need to be replaced every 5 to 10 years. Less maintenance and replacement over time translates into less visits to the dentist, and fewer materials and chemicals used that put a strain on our environment. Dr. Shvartsman has completed an additional 2-year Post-Doctoral program in Implant dentistry and advanced dental prosthetics and have taught dental implant residents at NSUH at Manhasset.
Environment-preserving crowns: CEREC CAD/CAM dentistry has enabled Dr. Shvartsman to fabricate beautiful, metal-free porcelain crowns right in their offices. Using a 3-D camera a digital image of the tooth is made, and then using a computer the crown is designed and milled right in their office. Besides the added convenience of having a crown done in one visit there is the elimination of a myriad additional materials used to make one crown as well as the reduction in gasoline usage both by the patient and the crown delivery service. CAD/CAM crowns are strong, metal-free, natural looking and have an over 25-year track record of success.
Tips at home: Help protect one of our greatest our natural resources: water. By simply turning off faucet while you brush your teeth you can help save up to eight gallons of water a day which roughly equals to 240 gallons per month and 28,880 gallons a year!
Use toothbrushes made with recycled plastic and wood and paper cups to reduce land fill waste.
Buy organic toothpaste and mouth rinses. If you like to use an eclectic toothbrush then check out a new solar powered toothbrush, the Soladey-eco!
Have a professional dental cleaning and exam at least every six months to help prevent small problems turning into large ones that require extensive dental care that tax our environmental resources and add to the pollution of our Mother Earth.
