21-CENTURY DENTISTRY: isn’t it time YOU update?
We are a decade in to the 21-century. Like many industries that are affected by innovation, dentistry has advanced significantly since the 1800’s. Sadly, most dentists are still using Civil War era techniques and technology in a world of space age materials and advances. Fortunately, Dr. Alex Shvartsman has embraced current, state of the art thinking, technologies and techniques to provide his patients with modern, comfortable dental care.
Biomimetic Dentistry is a modern approach to tooth restoration. Its focus is to restore teeth as close as possible the natural biomechanical structure and form of the tooth. The original practice of drilling ditches, pits, dove-tail undercuts, and placing pins into healthy tooth structure as dictated by woodworking principles used with silver-mercury amalgam fillings weakens the tooth and makes it more susceptible to fracture. In fact, metal fillings are just space fillers and do nothing to reinforce a decay weakened tooth. 21 Century dentists, like Dr. Shvartsman use biological adhesives to bond tooth colored fillings into teeth, reinforcing them form the inside. There is no material that is as good as your own natural tooth therefore minimally-invasive and tooth structure-conserving dentistry is the trend of 21 Century Dentistry.
Digital x-rays use significantly lower radiation than film x-rays. In fact, our x-rays use 96% less radiation compared to old-fashioned film. Digital x-rays allows for improved diagnosis due to the ability to improve contrast and decay detecting algorithms. Equally important is the positive effect to the environment: the caustic chemicals used to develop film x-rays and led lined x-ray packets are not polluting the environment, leaving a healthier planet for out children.
Lasers have had a major impact in dentistry, especially in the past decade. Like many industries, dental lasers are used to improve the results of many traditional procedures. Dr. Shvartsman uses 3 different dental lasers in his practice. Procedures include decay removal, bloodless surgery, canker sore and cold sore treatment, periodontal disease treatment, root canal therapy and TMJ treatment. Lasers help reduce swelling, pain and help to improve the bodies healing response. In properly trained hands dental lasers are safe, effective and are transforming the dental experience for our patients. In addition, the DIAGNOdent laser is used by Dr. Shvartsman to painlessly detect tooth decay without the need for those pointy dental picks.
ICON Drill-free decay treatment is a revolutionary approach to treating early cavities. Until now, dentists have had only two choices in the treatment of small cavities: use fluoride OR “watch and wait” until it is time to “drill and fill.” ICON represents an entirely new, revolutionary approach to treatment of incipient cavities – a resin infiltrant. Developed in Europe over the past decade, ICON is the subject of numerous international and independent university studies proving its effectiveness. This breakthrough micro-infiltration technology fills and reinforces decay-weakened, demineralized enamel and stops cavity progression without destructive drilling or painful shots. Dr. Shvartsman is proud to be one of the first dentists in the country to offer ICON treatment to our patients.
CEREC CAD/CAM single visit crowns will save you time and money. Previously, crowns required at least two or three appointments. Using the most accurate in office-3D digital scanner camera and Computer Assisted Design (CAD), Dr. Shvartsman can now take a picture of your tooth instead of using the goopy rubber impression material that makes many patients gag. Then using Computer Assisted Milling (CAM) your new crown is robotically milled right in his office in about 10 minutes! Dr. Shvartsman uses the new innovative porcelain Emax that is 4 times stronger than conventional porcelain yet is gentle on natural teeth. He is proud to be in the minority of dentists who offer the convenience of single visit CEREC crowns to his patients.
Needle-Free Injections: Feeling the stab of the dental needle is a common source of anxiety for many patients. For those of you familiar with Star Trek, injections in the imagined future are done not with a needle but with a puff of air. Needle-free injections is no longer a fantasy, but a reality in our office! Our needle phobic patients really appreciate this innovative needle -free injection technology. Air forced injections are as painless as a puff of air.
